hooded towel tutorial

this is going to be a super quick...
kind of already know what your doing tutorial
then i will post a bunch more pictures
and a more detailed tutorial below.
in case you need a little more instruction.

you will need a bath towel and a hand towel
this usually costs around $7 (at target)
and you can make two towels out of one hand towel
so you can purchase two bath towels & one hand towel
and make two....costing around $5 each
first step: cut the hand towel in half
(hamburger, not a hot dog...if that makes sense)
then fold lengthwise (hot dog) and sew raw edge together.
back stitching at both ends.
that will make the hood.
the picture below is the hood, inside out.
next step: take the bath towel and find the center
i used three fingers and folded in
and then folded over, then pin in place.
repeat on the other side of the pin.
it should look like this.
this is what it will look like on the other side.
this is the side you want facing you when you attach the hood.
next step: sew along pinned edge.
just under the edge and back stitch over the ends and center.
next step: once the bath towel is sewn
line up the center of the hood, with the center of the towel.
attach the hood by pinning the centers together.
then follow along until there is nothing else to pin.
just to clarify: both edges will be facing towards the ceiling
next step: sew along just inside the edge.
being careful not to bunch towel.
i would go slow over the thick part and back stitch
just to make sure things stay together.
take the pins out and sew along edge again.
and there you have it....
one baby hooded bath towel.
this is what the back looks like
and this is what the inside looks like
after many, many washes.

ok, here is the long drawn out tutorial.
this is going to be very detailed
so detailed you can look at the computer screen
then do a step and look back at the screen
to make sure you did it right.

start out with a hand towel and a bath towel.
like i mentioned before, if you get two bath towels
you can make two hooded towels.
first step: cut hand towel in half
the easiest way would be to fold lengthwise (like a hot dog)
and then cut in half (like a hamburger)
there will be three finished edges and one raw edge.
now fold the cut hand towel in half again (like a hot dog)
and sew along the raw edge.
i like to sew about 3 inches in from the raw end.
it makes the hood a little smaller.
you can sew along the original raw edge and it won't be huge
i just like the hood smaller, my personal choice.
this is what it looks like a few inches from the raw edge.
i would leave about a 1/2 inch
which will fray when washed.
this is what the hood will look like once sewn.
now there are two options for the hood.
if you really want to get detailed.
you can leave it square or make it rounded.
square on the left, rounded on the right (right side out)
to make the rounded hood.
you sewn along the corner.
one edge is the folded side and the other edge is the raw edge.
then cut the excess off.
they will look like this, inside out.
square on the left, rounded on the right.
now that the hood is done.
time to start on the bath towel portion.
find the center of the towel.
by folding it in half (hamburger style) and placing a pin in place
if your towel has a tag...
it should be on the left, touching the ground under the towel.
or you can cut it off.
now take three fingers and place them to one side of the pin
then fold towel over your fingers
and then back over.
making the towel look like this.
then pin in place
bird's eye view :)
now do the same thing on the other side of the pin.
it will look like this.
same view, i just separated the towel towards the bottom
so you could see what it's suppose to look like.
this is what the other side of the towel will look like.
this is the side you want facing you when you attach the hood.now sew along the edge.
actually just inside the edge, on the towel.
back stitching on the ends and the middle
to make sure it is sturdy.
this is what it will look like.
oh and i forgot to mention...
it's best to use thread that matches the towel
here is what the other side looks like sewn.
top view.
now you will attach the hood to the towel.
match the center of the towel, with the seam of the hood.
all edges should be facing the ceiling.
pin in place. i had to use two pins where it is thick.
then continue to pin the edges together.
pinning the entire edge of the hood to the edge of the towel.
this is what it should look like.
well one side at least.
this is what it looks like with both sides pinned.
i wouldn't suggest doing this
but here is what it looks like pinned.
now sew along the edge.
sewing the hood to the towel, back stitching at each end.
when you get to the center it will be thick.
keep checking to make sure you are not sewing
more of the towel that you want to.
also remember to back stitch in the center.
then take the pins out and repeat.
cut off all the extra thread
then your done!
you made your first hooded towel!
what it looks like hung up.
good job! and i hope your happy with how it turns out.
