Everett Anderson

Everett Anderson Barfield
was born february 11th at 3:30pm
he weighed 9 pounds 3 ounces and 19.5 inches long

we thought makai's birth was fast at 3 hours!
we were only in the hospital room for 4, four minutes.
yes! minutes, before everett was born.
the week leading up to everett's birth i was having minor cramping.
on a scale from 1-10, it was a 1.5...maybe a 2.
i had a non-stress tests that week (and the week before) and i had asked
during the test if they were contractions.
because i basically was terrified to have him at home or in the car.
nope, they weren't registering on the machine as anything.
they weren't happening consistently
but when they did happen, they were about every 10 minutes.

i texted my mom about 12:30pm and asked when she thought
she would be home from her dentist appt.
she said they were just finishing up and would come right away.
i called my dr. to see what should i do.
i was having consistent "pain", every once in a while
but i really, really didn't want to have the baby at home or in the car.
she knew this and had warned me to go straight to the hospital
once i thought i was in labor.
so i felt super dumb when she was like, well are you?
i said i don't know...and then i started to cry. she was all, why are you crying?
eddie and i had a good laugh about her being a little stern with me
she suggested i come to her office so she could check me
as she hadn't checked me yet, she is more midwifery (natural)
my mom and tanner show up around 1:30pm
as soon as i see my mom, i started crying again.
i think cause it was real then.
even though i wasn't in pain, i knew i was to give birth
which i actually hate, considering my track record i have reason too.

so we head to my dr.'s office and get there about 1:45
as i walked in and through the office the pain was increasing
and she said, oh! you aren't in labor. if you are talking and walking.
she checks me and says i am at a 3.
she suggested i walk around her office building
and she will re-check me in 45 minutes to an hour.
i believe she must have striped my membranes while checking.
cause my pain went from a 2 straight to an 8.
we only made it around half way around the building
and my contractions went from every 10-25 minutes
to less than 5 minutes and then eventually, less than 3 minutes.

i walk back into her packed office about 2:20
and i am sure i scared all sorts of first time mamas
i was starting to need to be vocal and stop to breath.
she asks me to check me again and i'm moving at a snails pace.
she was like, now you are in labor!!
i was at a 5 now. then she asks...did you just pee?
i was like, i don't know? no? i don't think so.
she was like crap! hurry!! get your pants on.
as i'm having contractions on top of each other
there i am unsuccessfully getting my pants on.
she was like, you have to keep moving! i don't want you to have him here.
silently i am so freaked out! eddie helps me with my pants.
bless his heart! such a trooper.

my dr. explains to eddie to go cover my seat with a trash bag
and the towel we brought.
i was really freaking out at this point, with her saying that to eddie.
she knew he was coming, and coming fast.
i had checked my contraction app and it was 2:45pm
so he darts out of the office and to the car.
i start walking to the car very slowly, having 5 contractions on the way.
at one point an older lady from a downstairs office asked if i was ok
i was like, oh yeah! totally, just in labor. you should have seen her face.
she helped me to my car where eddie was waiting.

the hospital is still another 20 minutes away.
by now it was 3pm. the hospital was 6 exits away.
plus a little street driving and lots of speed bumps.
we get 4 exits down the freeway and i have pressure to push.
eddie was driving 80+ miles per hour
and i told him to hurry up or we would have the baby in the car.
my only saving grace was my water hadn't completely broken
i suppose, i was just leaking? i never knew if the towel got wet.
so we arrive at the hospital and i really had to think if we could make it to maternity
or if we should just go straight into the ER.
eddie ran to go get a wheel chair from the ER.
as i got out of the car and sat down, my water broke.

we run down the long hallway to the elevators to get to the 2nd floor.
as we arrive to the elevator there are two kids with their mom.
they couldn't have been older than 10.
there i was, literally about to deliver. and i tried to pull myself together
for the sake of those children. i didn't want to scar them for life.
the elevator seemed like it took forever.
when a baby is born a lullaby is played.
i was like, oh...a baby was born. trying to make things a little less awkward.
as they both stared at me and the mom wasn't sure what to do.
so the elevator opens and the mom is like, we'll wait.
so we go upstairs and push the button to get into maternity.
i'm not sure what i said, but they knew who i was
and informed me that jo (my dr.) had just arrived and was waiting in the room.
at this point, i'm just ready to push and i'm trying not too
so i basically just kept my eyes shut to keep it together.

i was mid contraction when they asked me to stand up
and get undressed, all while my eyes where closed.
i was basically paralyzed in pain and i overheard them talking
about just cutting my maternity jeans off.
i ripped them off as fast as i could and basically hopped on the bed.
i pushed twice and he was here!! at 3:30pm
i finally opened my eyes. after i had him on my chest.
i awkwardly said hi to my nurses since i hadn't opened my eyes the entire time.
except to see where the bed was.
then it was back to having my eyes close to concentrate on the pain.
oh my goodness!!! it was so crazy! and so fast.

getting his first bath. he wasn't a fan.

he must have had his hands in his mouth in the womb.
cause he liked to keep his finger in his mouth or close to it.

he reminded us a lot of emi.
i think because of his coloring and his white dots on his nose.
but he also reminded us of makai because he had light eyebrows like makai.

i had to stay in my labor and deliver room for like 5+ hours
i was hemorrhaging since my delivery was so fast, i guess.
i knew something was wrong because of how my dr. was acting.
she didn't say anything and i didn't ask questions until she said
we have to give you a shot in your leg to stop the bleeding.
sweet, poke away. i'll spare the scooping details.
then she said:
you're bleeding a little more than i'd like, so i am going to shove these
five pills up your butt. i was like uh, what?
as if i hadn't been violated enough in that region.
turns out that didn't stop it either.
so they had to give me 2 bags of medicine by IV
and i couldn't go to recovery until the first bag had emptied.
they had a shift change shortly after i delivered.
they basically had nothing to tell them, it was funny.
we got here at 3:26pm and he was delivered by 3:30pm.
the new nurse would say, what about this?
the old nurse would be say, nope we didn't have time to do that.
the new nurse would ask another question and the old nurse
would say, no we weren't able to get that info either.

emi got out of school at 2:20, so when my mom went to pick her up
i really was having the baby.
they were so excited to finally meet him.

makai wasn't so sure of my IV and wouldn't even come near me at first.
thank you eddie for your fabulous photography.
we've had our camera over 5 years and he still can figure out how to use it.
oh well! this captures makai's smile and everett.

after about 5 hours we finally got transferred to recovery.
where i was served a cold dinner since dinner isn't served to labor and delivery
and poor eddie was on his own.
he finally left at one point to get something to eat.
he had finally gone down to the cafeteria at 7:10
too bad it closed at 7. poor guy was starving.

everett was a great nurser from the start and was sleeping well.
i don't think i ever went to sleep
as the room next to ours had a crying baby. basically the entire night.
eddie went out before 6am for bagels, since we didn't know when breakfast was served.
i showered and got dressed for the day.
at one point i went out to the nurses station to get
something to get the sticky tape residue off my arm from my IV.
they were like, you are up and walking and dressed?!
then my nurse was like, this is her 3rd baby. and they all shook their heads.
my nurse then said: so you're ready to go home? i said yep!
unfortunately i couldn't. i had to wait 24 hours for sure because of my bleeding "scare".

at 5pm on the 12th we were finally discharged and headed home.
